4pc place setting (4pc lun/pl) = knife, fork, teaspoon, salad fork.
This is currently the standard American size, and most manufacturers
since the 1960's have listed  this as the place size. A few makers
continue to market this size under the older luncheon  size heading.
If you are matching estate silver made before the 1960's, then the
difference may  be important, and you should have a knife, a fork, and
a ruler handy when you give us a call.

In a setting, the teaspoon, fork & salad fork are solid sterling pieces.
The knife, with very rare  exception, has a plaster-filled handle, wrapped
in sterling, attached to a stainless steel blade end.   Some knives,
mostly made before WW II, have silver-plated blades. We recommend
that you do  not try to match these blades as they can become rusty
around the worn edges over time.

4pc dinner setting (4pc din) = Same piece count as the place size, but
generally with a larger knife and fork.

4pc continental-european setting (4pc cont'l) = Even larger knife and fork.

5pc settings = 4pc place settings plus soup spoon, round (cream) or oval.
Some manufacturers  offer choice of shape; some offer a choice, but only for
certain patterns.

Individual & small serving pieces (indiv/sm serv) -- cream soup spoon
(round), oval soup/place/dessert spoon, iced tea spoon, cocktail fork, flat
butter spreader, hollow-handle butter spreader, teaspoon, salad fork, knife,
fork. Specialty pieces such as coffee spoons, fish forks, sugar spoon, lemon
fork, olive fork, and fish knives may be lower or higher in price.

Some pieces made in the last 20 years may be hollow-handle pieces(HH):
Hollow-handle pieces(HH) -- such as pie/cake server, wedding cake, & master
butter knife.
Just like the place- setting knives, these have a plaster- filled handle wrapped in
sterling  attached to a stainless steel end.

Large serving piece (lrg serv) -- serving spoon, gravy ladle, cold meat fork,
flat server.   These are solid sterling pieces, unless noted.

Package deals vary by manufacturer. We list only those packages that cost
less than  a la carte prices. Most packages are offered in 5pc settings, and 48,
and 66 pc sets.   Generally, the more pieces the better the price break.
